The window covers are done

Because the benchwork crossed 4 windows, I needed to devise a way to hide the windows but still leave them somewhat accessible. I cut tempered hardboard panels to fit between the benchwork and the valance. The panels sit in front of the window trim mounding. The previous owners of the house had recently installed oak trim around all of the house windows and doors. Had the molding not been brand new, I would’ve removed the molding around the windows to have the hardboard panels sit more flush to the walls.

As a result, the panels sit 3/4” in front of the walls. I painted the panels the backdrop blue color.

Before installing the panels, I used hot glue to attach landscape fabric on the inside of the windows. I did this to mask the benchwork and valance from being seen from outside.

The upper panel shows the vertical OSB strips glued to the backside to help stiffen the panel. The lower panel is painted the backdrop blue.
The landscape fabric is visible here. The 2 white blocks on the benchwork keep the panel from being pushed towards the window.
The oak trim pushes the benchwork away from the wall
Above the valance. I hated screwing the valance brackets to the oak but I didn’t find a better alternative.

I’ll be taking some time off from the railroad as Jen and I work on outdoor projects, the biggest of which is the landscaping in front of our house.

Location of our signal garden?
