Heritage Grain Coop

I’ve begun the construction on the railroad’s first building. The town of Sutton’s largest industry is the Heritage Grain Coop elevator. The elevator has spots for 7 cars. I’m constructing the elevator silos out of 1-1/4” PVC pipe cut in half lengthwise. The elevator will be placed against a wall.

PVC pipe cut to length

Using my table saw, I did some test cuts on some scrap PVC to determine the best way to cut the pipe in half. Then I chop sawed 12” lengths of pipe. Ripping the pipe proved very messy but fortunately I rolled the table saw out to the driveway.

Glueing the pipes together

I sanded off the printing on the pipes, cut a piece of double thick cardboard to size and hot glued the pipes to the cardboard. As seen above, I used my DIY wood square to hold everything in alignment. I created the headhouse from black 1/4” foamboard.

Mocked up unloading shed

Using some cardstock, I mocked up a simple unloading shed to straddle the tracks. The finished shed will be made of styrene.

Next post, I’ll get into finishing and painting.
