Another project tackled last week was cutting wood for operator shelves to be placed around the railroad. One of my pet peeves is when operators put stuff on the railroad. Stuff like clipboards, throttles, radios, paperwork, etc. sitting on the railroad drives me crazy. To help dissuade this, I’ve installed some narrow shelves around the railroad in Illinois.

The shelf is simply a piece of 1×4 with a clipboard slot cut into it. I rounded all the visible edges, primed then painted it the same gray as the fascia. They are installed on the long straight sections of the benchwork.

The shelf is shallow enough that it shouldn’t interfere with operations.
I’ll also eventually fasten some of the folding cup holders salvaged from the old CWI.
