Track painting

Now that the track laying is done, I’ve begun to paint the track. The ties of the flex track and turnouts are a shiny black and the rail is shiny on the sides, not realistic. I broke out the Paasche airbrush and used some thinned flat latex enamel wall paint and went to town. Years ago, Dom and I would use Floquil rail brown paint to color the track. The Floquil was expensive, hard to clean up and very odiferous. The paint I used today is odor free, cleans up with water and was FREE! Let me explain, 10 years ago, Ace Hardware had an offer to get a free quart sized sample of their new paint. I took some of the Floquil rail brown, painted a swatch on a card and then color matched the swatch to the sample. On the CWI, I painted a little bit of the lower level mainline with this paint.

After the paint dried, I used a wood block to scrape the top of the rails. A quick wipe with a kerosene dipped rag and all was clean.

I also ran the first train through the Iliana Tunnel from Illinois into Indiana.

The track on the lower half hasn’t been painted yet.
The track on the right is unpainted.
The Groveton track is painted awaiting cleaning.
The wood block scrap I used to scrape the track. The diverging leg of the turnout hasn’t been scraped.
The 36 year old Paasche H airbrush. This airbrush is STILL made and parts are available if needed. I made the holder out of scrap.
The free paint sample. YouTube showed me how to properly thin it for airbrush use. I’ll never use this whole can in my lifetime!
The first westbound train through the tunnel onto the painted track.

Next, I start on the track in Illinois.
